How do we source clean drinking water in a future surrounded by water?

Studio Project, MDIT, RMIT

With continued ocean and atmospheric warming, sea levels have been rising over the past century. By 2070, sea levels are expected to rise by 8-9 meters if the worst climatic predictions eventuate. Sop Pod is a speculative floating transit platform located in 2070 Melbourne. The city is thriving with the aquafers now salinized, freshwater is now extracted from the air and the ocean. As new pause points in a flooded city, Sop-Pods are places for gathering where residents can wait for a water taxi or socialize around the cooling experience provided by the SopTrees

Rising Temperatures

Temperatures in Melbourne bay are predicted to rise by 5 degrees, leading to an 8-9 meter rise in sea levels. Melbourne in 2070 will be water inundated and water scarce.

Sop Pod network

The sop network sits in accordance with the 20-minute neighbourhood plan of Melbourne city.

Sop Trees

Specially designed and fabricated based on bio-technologies to quench people’s thirst by providing seaweed edible water bubbles. Fabricated from seaweed-derived bioplastic to eliminate waste, these bioplastic structures can completely decompose post their life cycle.
